Graphic Timeline Shows More Than 100 Nonprofit Brands Over the Past Two Centuries of American History
While nonprofits are increasingly clamoring to improve their brands, the trend is not new. From even before the founding of our republic, nonprofits have carefully nurtured their brands in executing their missions and appealing to donors. This graphic timeline shows top nonprofit brands in the United States over the course of American history, with anecdotes about how they were founded, how they grew, and how their logos have evolved — I believe this is the first time a history of nonprofit brands has been presented visually.
We have included organizations that we feel represent the various categories of the nonprofit sector, have introduced new models, or have achieved impact with their work, but this list is by no means definitive. What organizations would you have included or not included? Let us know. We hope you learn something about the role of nonprofits in our society and hope this sparks a debate about nonprofit branding.
